4 Apps for Learning Japanese

So, you want to learn Japanese. Japanese is a beautiful but complex language, so many people seek to master it for various reasons. I studied Japanese for around a year, so I'd like to recommend, for aaaall those trying to learn this challenging language, 4 useful and smart apps that I used for learning Japanese!

I will post more tips and tricks for learning Japanese, so there's more posts to come!

1. Hiragana and Katakana
This is a free app with many different functions to learn Hiragana & Katakana, two of the three writing systems in Japan, from Study Cards to Lessons to Quizzes (that you can customize). It is a very simple yet useful app if you don't want to spend money learning.

2. Midori
This app costs money, but I think it is worth it since you get a whole and pretty detailed Japanese dictionary. But it also has other things like translation, lists & bookmarks and more. Another very efficient feature is that, if you don't know the character, you can draw it with your finger and several search results and meanings will pop up based on what the app thought you wanted to write. It helped me a lot to practice writing Japanese properly!

3. Innovative 101 Learn Languages
A free app where you can learn many languages, not just Japanese. It is a wonderful app for learning Japanese; there's so much to do. You can listen to podcasts, get practice sheets, watch thousands of lessons... the app also has a website. If it's Japanese you want to learn, their website is called "Japanesepod101.com". Both the app and the website are free to use, but if you want to unlock most of the features, you have to pay an amount of money.

4. Tae Kim's Guide to Learning Japanese
Tae Kim's Guide to Learning Japanese is collection of Tae Kim's online grammar guide, smoothed into a user-friendly app. The application is set up like a book, and is exactly as the title reads: a guide. The guide is written for any learner who wants to learn, review or increase their grammar and vocabulary. If I'm not mistaken, he should also have a free website you can look up and read instead of using the app, but they're both free so it doesn't really matter; just a preference.

80's J-Pop: Miki Matsubara

Album cover for Miki Matsubara's "Stay With Me". Miki Matsubara , or Suzie Matsubara [as she also went by], was a composer, lyricist and singer from Japan. She was known for her 80's J-Pop love songs, but really became famous after her debut single, " Stay With Me ", was released in November 1979. I'm sure many of you have heard this song, and I'm a fan of this talented woman myself, thus I decided to write about her. Early Life Miki Matsubara was born 28th of November 1959 in Osaka ( Kishiwada ), Japan. She grew up with a father, mother and younger sister in Hiraoka Town . Miki quickly became familiar with jazz music, as her mother was a jazz singer. She started playing piano at an outstandingly young age of 3 and simply embraced music in general, not only jazz but also rock. She went to ordinary schools her whole childhood and was praised as being a great and hardworking student who would enroll into university, but Miki had already dreams of beco...

Now that Serinuma has become an attractive girl to her classmates, her snarky kouhai Shinomiya-kun, and her senpai Mutsumi, how is she going to deal with them ...with her constant BL-filled, fujoshi mind?!" The Black-Haired Woman: Chiyuki

For this Character of the Week , I chose my favourite female protagonist ever. However, there will be heavy spoilers in this one, so beware if you have not seen the anime Death Parade yet! Her name in the anime is never revealed until the very end, and she has black hair with a tiny white strand on the right side, so she has always been known as The Black-Haired Woman (or, in Japanese, 黒髪の女 [Kurokami no Onna]). To fans, she is sometimes referred to as Onna , which means "woman" in Japanese. Her real name is Chiyuki , though her surname is unknown. The series followed Decim , the main character and the bartender of Quindecim , but the way Decim judges souls changes completely and the story makes a turn when the mysterious woman shows up at the bar. As she has no idea how or why she came there, she became Decim´s assistant at the bar and started helping him with the lost souls that comes frequently to the place, just like the black-haired woman. When you die, you arriv...
