The Sapporo Snow Festival, or Sapporo Yuki Matsuri,
is a Japanese festival that is held each year in Sapporo (hence the
name), Japan´s fifth largest city which is up north in Hokkaido. It is
one of Japan´s most popular, largest winter events and attracts millions
of people & tourists every year. Odori Park, Susukino and Tsudome
are the three main sites of the festival.
It is mainly known
for its magnificant snow and ice sculpures that can be several meters
high and wide. The subject of the statues varies quite alot, from famous
people to buildings to events. Every year though, around 400 statues
are created, which is almost insane.
This amazing snow festival has been active and around since 1950. It all started as a one-day event, when some high school students were making snow-and-ice sculptures in Odori Park. There were other snow festivals before the Sapporo Snow Festival, however, all of them were suspended during World War II.
