Yuri!!! on Ice: Yuuri Katsuki

"Reeling from his crushing defeat at the Grand Prix Finale, Yuuri Katsuki, once Japan's most promising figure skater, returns to his family home to assess his options for the future. At age 23, Yuuri's window for success in skating is closing rapidly, and his love of pork cutlets and aptitude for gaining weight are not helping either.

However, Yuuri finds himself in the spotlight when a video of him performing a routine previously executed by five-time world champion, Victor Nikiforov, suddenly goes viral. In fact, Victor himself abruptly appears at Yuuri's house and offers to be his mentor. As one of his biggest fans, Yuuri eagerly accepts, kicking off his journey to make it back onto the world stage. But the competition is fierce, as the rising star from Russia, Yuri Plisetsky, is relentlessly determined to defeat Yuuri and win back Victor's tutelage."

Yuri!!! on Ice (in Japanese, ユーリ!!! on ICE) is a Comedy & Sports anime television series about figure skating. It was produced by MAPPA as a 12-episode-long anime that premiered in Fall 2016, airing from October 6th 2016 to December 22nd 2016. This time, I am going to talk about one of the main characters; Yuuri Katsuki.

As said, Yuuri Katsuki (in Japanese, 勝生 勇利, Katsuki Yūri) is one of the main characters in the series, and a competitive figure skater. Yuuri was born in Hasetsu, Saga Prefecture, Kyushu, Japan, where his family owns and operates the last bathhouse inn remaining in the town. Yuuri began figure skating as a child at Ice Castle with his childhood friends Yuuko and Takeshi Nishigori. His ballet teacher was the one who had recommended him to learn figure skating.

Personality-wise, Yuuri is known to be "the figure skater with the world's biggest glass heart". He is soft hearted and easily devastated in the face of failure - so much so that he can slip into a depression for months at a time. He is quiet, kind, and easily embarrassed, but he is also shown to be stubborn and extremely competitive. After being taken under Victor´s wing as a student, Yuuri begins to steadily develop more confidence in himself. He becomes determined to chase his dreams. However, he still becomes easily discouraged and anxious and does not know how to deal with being the person to beat.

Appearance-wise, 23-year-old (that is his age in the beginning atleast) Yuuri has short, messy black hair and brown eyes. Yuuri wears half-rimmed blue glasses, but while he is skating, he removes them. He combs his hair backwards when performing his programs before a crowd. Yuuri wore layers of clothing to hide his weight gain from binge eating. His warm-up outfit is usually a jacket and black pants with a stripe down the side. He wears gloves while skating and uses skates with standard blades. Yuuri gains weight easily, but when he is in top form, he also has slight muscle due to his exercise and ice skating. Nonetheless, his body, especially his face, maintains a soft appearance, regardless of physical form.

I really liked the anime, mainly because I am a HUGE fan of figure skating and just being on the ice in general, so I enjoyed it much. I am also a big supporter of Yuri and Yaoi, I find it adorable that people can put differences or genders aside for love. The anime is funny, witty, beautiful, motivating... yeah, you get it. And about Yuuri; I like his character and his development throughout the years in the anime. He himself is also motivating for people with dreams or want to accomplish something. I like his passion for ice-skating, it is quite nice to see too. Well, that is about all I have got to say about this series. I recommend it to anyone (even if you are not a fan of Yaoi)!

80's J-Pop: Miki Matsubara

Album cover for Miki Matsubara's "Stay With Me". Miki Matsubara , or Suzie Matsubara [as she also went by], was a composer, lyricist and singer from Japan. She was known for her 80's J-Pop love songs, but really became famous after her debut single, " Stay With Me ", was released in November 1979. I'm sure many of you have heard this song, and I'm a fan of this talented woman myself, thus I decided to write about her. Early Life Miki Matsubara was born 28th of November 1959 in Osaka ( Kishiwada ), Japan. She grew up with a father, mother and younger sister in Hiraoka Town . Miki quickly became familiar with jazz music, as her mother was a jazz singer. She started playing piano at an outstandingly young age of 3 and simply embraced music in general, not only jazz but also rock. She went to ordinary schools her whole childhood and was praised as being a great and hardworking student who would enroll into university, but Miki had already dreams of beco...

The Black-Haired Woman: Chiyuki

For this Character of the Week , I chose my favourite female protagonist ever. However, there will be heavy spoilers in this one, so beware if you have not seen the anime Death Parade yet! Her name in the anime is never revealed until the very end, and she has black hair with a tiny white strand on the right side, so she has always been known as The Black-Haired Woman (or, in Japanese, 黒髪の女 [Kurokami no Onna]). To fans, she is sometimes referred to as Onna , which means "woman" in Japanese. Her real name is Chiyuki , though her surname is unknown. The series followed Decim , the main character and the bartender of Quindecim , but the way Decim judges souls changes completely and the story makes a turn when the mysterious woman shows up at the bar. As she has no idea how or why she came there, she became Decim´s assistant at the bar and started helping him with the lost souls that comes frequently to the place, just like the black-haired woman. When you die, you arriv...
