Diabolik Lovers

"At the behest of her father, Yui Komori goes to live in a secluded mansion, home to the six Sakamaki brothers—Shuu, Reiji, Ayato, Kanato, Raito, and Subaru—a family of vampires. Though at first the siblings are confused as to why the girl has arrived, they soon realize that she is to be their new "sacrificial bride," not to mention their other, more carnal intentions for her. After meeting the brothers, Yui quickly begins to question why her father would have sent her here and why she feels a strange, new pain in her chest. With each brother more sadistic than the last, Yui's life as a captive takes a harrowing turn in her new home. As her days turn into endless nights, and each brother vows to make her his own, Yui falls deeper and deeper into madness and ecstasy."

A description of the short anime Diabolik Lovers. Sounds interesting, does it not? Something that's perfect for people who fancy shorter series or vampires... But it is far from perfect.

Diabolik Lovers is a bit of an old anime, as it premiered in autumn 2013. Like mentioned, this series is also a pretty short series, consisting of 12 short episodes. The genres to describe the anime is Harem, Shoujo, Vampire and School. It is also a popular visual novel, and has OVAs, prequels & sequels.

Diabolik Lovers is a show I watched long, long ago, and it was mostly because I love supernatural creatures (such as vampires). I was in my early teenage years when I watched it for the first time so I don't remember much of what my opinion was of the show back then, but I remember thinking how great it was, so I decided to rewatch it about a week ago... and my opinion has definitely taken a bad turn completely.

So let's start with some of the cons and then some of the pros, so we can get rid of the bad stuff right away.

As I rewatched DL, I could tell there was a lot of things that was off. The story is hugely flawed. It never gets explained (atleast in the anime), not even at the final episode. It also does not make sense; it feels like the creators simply wanted to make a short, simple and sexy vampire franchise... and leave out everything else. When watching, I could barely feel effort put into the series, which was very disappointing. Every single character did not develop at all during each episode either. Literally nothing changed throughout it all; the same things kept happening, and repetition can only get you so far. From the reviews I've read, it seems like most people agree with these statements and facts as much as I do. There's hardly any structure whatsoever.

Now, the good things about Diabolik Lovers... which is only two things: Vampires and art. That's it. Personally, I almost always enjoy vampire stories, and it was the main reason why I decided to watch DL, as I said. Next, the art. I think the animation and artwork is very odd yet pretty, which is always a huge plus for me, since I have a very artistic soul and love to draw myself. So that was nice to see. But at the same time, you will most likely not get away with having good art/animation but no story to follow or characters to develop.

Well then, would I recommend Diabolik Lovers? No, I would not, unless you are the type of person who can enjoy "a story without a story", to put it that way. An overall rating from me would be 2/10.

80's J-Pop: Miki Matsubara

Album cover for Miki Matsubara's "Stay With Me". Miki Matsubara , or Suzie Matsubara [as she also went by], was a composer, lyricist and singer from Japan. She was known for her 80's J-Pop love songs, but really became famous after her debut single, " Stay With Me ", was released in November 1979. I'm sure many of you have heard this song, and I'm a fan of this talented woman myself, thus I decided to write about her. Early Life Miki Matsubara was born 28th of November 1959 in Osaka ( Kishiwada ), Japan. She grew up with a father, mother and younger sister in Hiraoka Town . Miki quickly became familiar with jazz music, as her mother was a jazz singer. She started playing piano at an outstandingly young age of 3 and simply embraced music in general, not only jazz but also rock. She went to ordinary schools her whole childhood and was praised as being a great and hardworking student who would enroll into university, but Miki had already dreams of beco...

The Black-Haired Woman: Chiyuki

For this Character of the Week , I chose my favourite female protagonist ever. However, there will be heavy spoilers in this one, so beware if you have not seen the anime Death Parade yet! Her name in the anime is never revealed until the very end, and she has black hair with a tiny white strand on the right side, so she has always been known as The Black-Haired Woman (or, in Japanese, 黒髪の女 [Kurokami no Onna]). To fans, she is sometimes referred to as Onna , which means "woman" in Japanese. Her real name is Chiyuki , though her surname is unknown. The series followed Decim , the main character and the bartender of Quindecim , but the way Decim judges souls changes completely and the story makes a turn when the mysterious woman shows up at the bar. As she has no idea how or why she came there, she became Decim´s assistant at the bar and started helping him with the lost souls that comes frequently to the place, just like the black-haired woman. When you die, you arriv...
