80's J-Pop: Miki Matsubara

Album cover for Miki Matsubara's "Stay With Me". Miki Matsubara , or Suzie Matsubara [as she also went by], was a composer, lyricist and singer from Japan. She was known for her 80's J-Pop love songs, but really became famous after her debut single, " Stay With Me ", was released in November 1979. I'm sure many of you have heard this song, and I'm a fan of this talented woman myself, thus I decided to write about her. Early Life Miki Matsubara was born 28th of November 1959 in Osaka ( Kishiwada ), Japan. She grew up with a father, mother and younger sister in Hiraoka Town . Miki quickly became familiar with jazz music, as her mother was a jazz singer. She started playing piano at an outstandingly young age of 3 and simply embraced music in general, not only jazz but also rock. She went to ordinary schools her whole childhood and was praised as being a great and hardworking student who would enroll into university, but Miki had already dreams of beco...

Naruto: Sakura Haruno

I knew I would have to cover this character sooner or later, so today is the day: Sakura Haruno from Naruto ! Naruto is a manga series by Masashi Kishimoto, and also happens to be my favourite manga of all time! Anyhow, Naruto had its premiere September 21st year 1999 in the popular Japanese magazine " Shueisha's Weekly Shounen Jump Magazine ", and got very positive reviews, which made Kishimoto and a studio make an anime out of it. There's also games, movies, cosplays, merchandise... everything! But something that most of the anime community agrees on is that Sakura is, in one word, useless. She is one of the most hated characters ever, and if you ask me, for good reasons too... I may explain more and give my opinion in another blog post, but I don't want to hate on something someone worked so hard for, so I probably will just leave the information like this. If you are interested in why she is such a strongly disliked character, look it up and take your time to...

Shopping in Tokyo

Shopping in Japan is an amazing experience. With just as much traditional art forms and craftmanships as contemporary and imported objects, the selection is the highest possible. Something that is just as interesting is the variation between stores; from flashy department stores and enormous shopping centers to simpler sales stands at the corner of the streets and small crafting shops. Within one day have the constant welcome greeting " irasshaimase " every time one enters a store either made a customer crazy or one became a part of the busy streets. Japan is no longer the world's most expensive country, but the price on some wares can still be shocking. Some things created in Japan, for example cameras and other electronics, is actually cheaper to buy outside of Japan. On the other side, it is possible to buy real and uncommon souvenirs for a surprisingly cheap price. You can buy almost anything in Tokyo, from kokeshi (traditional wooden dolls) to Chanel handbags and th...

FLCL: Naota Nandaba

For this week's Character of the Week , I wanted to pick out a short and old anime, but also one I've never seen or heard of. So, welcome Naota Nandaba from FLCL ! FLCL, Furi Kuri or Fooly Cooly , is an anime that dates back to year 2000-2001, having its first episode in April 2000 and its last episode in March 2001. It is a Mecha, Action, Comedy and Psychological anime series with only 6 episodes, each one lasting 25 minutes or so. Yet, people seem to genuinely like it! This is certainly not a hated anime; most people says that it's a good and fast-paced story. "Naota Nandaba is an ordinary sixth grader living in a city where nothing amazing ever seems to happen. After his brother Tasuku leaves town to play baseball in America, Naota takes it upon himself to look after everything Tasuku left behind—from his top bunk bed to his ex-girlfriend Mamimi Samejima, who hasn't stopped clinging to Naota since Tasuku left. Little does Naota know, however, that his mundane ...

Who's That Pokémon?: Anorith

Who's that Pokémon? It is Anorith ! Anorith, also known as the Old Shrimp Pokémon, is a Pokémon introduced in Generation III, which means it can be found in places like Hoenn Region. What is a pleasant surprise is that Anorith is a Rock- and Bug-type! We don't see this often! Anorith is also known to be a Fossil Pokémon, so to evolve it to its evolutionary form called Armaldo, you need to... well, I'm not going to spoil it. Hint though: You need a specific item! The eight wings on Anorith's body flutters and drives it through the warm oceans, where it lives. Anorith is 0,7 meters tall and weighs 12,5 kg. This Pokémon is resistant to Poison- and Normal-types... however, it is not Immune to anything and Weak against Water- (ironically), Rock- and Steel-types of Pokémon. The moves Anorith can learn are Scratch, Harden, Mud Sport, Water Gun, Metal Claw, Protect, Ancient Power, Fury Cutter, Slash, Rock Blast, Crush Claw and X-Scissor. I've never heard of a Pokémon named...

Love Alarm - Season 1 & 2 Review

Love Alarm is a South Korean web TV series starring Kim So-hyun, Song Kang and Jung Ga-ram as the three main characters. It is based on the webtoon of the same name by Chon Kye-young. It became so popular that, like many other webtoons, it appeared on television as a series, having its first premiere and episode 22th of August 2019. The 12th of March 2021 though, the creators of the series finally completed filming the long-awaited Season 2 that all fans has been begging for, so I figured I could make a review of the K-Drama (no spoilers, ofcourse!). If you'd like to see it, the whole thing is available to watch on Netflix. In a modern future, there exists a certain app called "Love Alarm" that has taken over the world, and for a good reason: If you download the app, it shall show you within a 10 meters radius if someone has romantic feelings for you. Quite the matchmaker, right? Kim Jojo is, however, an ordinary high school girl who does not care about the Love Alarm a...
